Head Lice

Head Lice

For students found to have live adult lice infestation, school clinic personnel will:

  • Exclude students at the end of the school day if live lice are found on student's head.
  • School clinic personnel will re-check excluded students on the following school day for live adult lice to determine effective treatment.
  • The school nurse retains authority to exclude a child with repeated infestations where there is evidence of inadequate treatment.
  • A letter will be sent home informing parents that lice have been found in the classroom
  • PARENTS: please take the time to inspect your student's head for the prevalence of lice and or nits and use the treatment specifically for lice. Regular shampoo will not kill lice or their eggs. (nits)
  • A special nit comb is available and is most helpful in the removal of the nits.
  • Classroom checks will no longer be performed. By the time a child with an active lice infestation has been identified, he or she may have had the infestation for one month or more, and therefore poses little additional risk of transmission to others.
